Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence: IOI’s Impact and Evolution

Posted: July 25, 2024

Industrial Opportunities, Inc. (IOI) marks its 50th anniversary this year, celebrating a remarkable journey of growth, innovation, and community impact. Established in March 1974, IOI has grown from a modest operation with a workforce of eight into a powerhouse of industry and community service with a workforce of 178. Many of those who work at IOI are individuals with disabilities.

“Our mission is to provide vocational services to adults with disabilities, especially with significant disabilities, and we do a number of programs on-site that provide a meaningful day of activities,” said Tom O’Brien, President of Industrial Opportunities, Inc.

What originally began as a small center in Marble that offered Adult Basic Education classes to individuals with disabilities has blossomed into a sprawling 108,344 square-foot facility in Andrews. In 1975, paid work was introduced into the daily schedule of the disabled individuals whom IOI serves, and today the organization has a $9.35 million operating budget and generates more than $8 million in sales revenue each year. That was accomplished, in part, by integrating non-disabled workers with the disabled workforce in 1984.

“About 25 percent of our workforce comprises individuals with disabilities,” O’Brien explained. “We blend vocational rehabilitation with a business model, creating a self-sustaining enterprise that supports our mission.”

IOI’s product line has evolved significantly over the years, starting with baskets and napkin rings then later expanding into suspenders and military gear, such as armored vest plate carriers, tourniquets, and ammo pouches. Today, IOI is the only manufacturer of a unique helmet liner used by the U.S. Army, and its products are even utilized in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This diversification has been key to IOI’s success, enabling the organization to secure over 165 contracts totaling more than $168 million since 2003.

IOI’s impact extends beyond its workforce to the broader community. The organization has generated significant economic benefits, with a direct local and state tax impact of over $1.16 million annually. An economic impact study by Western Carolina University in 2009 estimated IOI’s annual contribution to the community at over $11 million.

IOI also plays a crucial role in vocational training, partnering with local high schools to provide pre-employment transition services to students. This program has seen remarkable success, with 34 percent of participants securing jobs.

“It’s inspiring to see young people get their first paycheck and realize their potential,” O’Brien said.

To commemorate its 50th anniversary, IOI has planned a series of events and activities throughout the year. These include monthly celebrations for employees, community open houses, and special recognition events. The highlight will be an open house on October 4th, inviting the community to tour the facility, learn about IOI’s operations, and celebrate this significant milestone.

Reflecting on his 50 years with IOI, O’Brien expressed gratitude for the opportunity to make a difference. “I came here as a volunteer, planning to stay for three months. Fifty years later, I’m still here, proud of what we’ve accomplished and excited for the future,” he said.
