Evaluation/Work Adjustment

Vocational Evaluation

Participants sponsored by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation or other agency usually enter an initial, 30 day evaluation period.

Through the utilization of various testing techniques, real work assignments, interviews, and observations by facility personnel, assessments are made of the individual’s:

• Social maturity
• Academic ability
• Physical capacity
• Manual dexterity
• Ability to follow direction
• Independent problem solving
• Vocational interests
• Knowledge of employer expectations
• Job seeking skills  

Recommendations for educational training, job training, or job placement are given at this time.

Vocational Evaluation Admission Criteria

• There must be a need for information concerning the individual’s ability to work in competitive employment.
• The individual must be sponsored by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, private rehabilitation, or other agency.
• The individual must have a recent physical and/or psychological examination.
• The individual should have a disability that interferes with employment.

Work Adjustment

If the results of Vocational Evaluation indicate a need for additional training toward competitive employment, participants may be referred for Work Adjustment Services.

This program offers work experience with goals to meet the individual needs of each participant. Work Adjustment services are provided in an organized, systematic manner and are transitional, time-limited, soft-skilled focus, treatment/training services. It utilizes individual and work activities to assist an individual in understanding the meaning, value, and demands of employment. It further modifies or develops attitudes, personal characteristics, and work behavior; and develops functional capacities, as required, in order to assist individuals toward their optimum level of vocational development.

Work Adjustment promotes a positive self-concept of each individual. This depends on the individual needs and progress made towards accomplishing personalized vocational goals.

Vocational instruction and counseling in job-related skills, and interpersonal skills are offered where needed. Preparing the participant for employment is the ultimate goal of the program.

There is flexibility on the amount of time any individual spends receiving training. However, Work Adjustment Services are not to exceed more than 90 days.

Work Adjustment Criteria

• There must be a need for vocational and related training in preparing for employment.
• There must be a reasonable expectation that the individual will benefit from instruction in job seeking skills, job retention, and interpersonal skills.
• Time-limited, on-the-job coaching services are available as needed.
• The ultimate goal is job placement.
